Problem vs. Resolution Matrix
FRICTION ANALYSIS
Friction 01

Tedious Paper Slips & Forgery

Students waited in 45-minute warden queues for manual paper slips that could easily be lost, altered, or forged at campus perimeter gates.

Resolution

Tamper-proof digital gatepasses with time-bound cryptographic QR codes verified at checkpoints in under 2 seconds.

Friction 02

Blind Campus Attendance & Safety Void

Administration had no centralized way to know which hostellers were physically on campus versus outside, causing dangerous confusion during roll-calls and emergencies.

Resolution

Real-time attendance engine: security guard entry/exit scans automatically synchronize live student in-campus vs out-of-campus status.

Friction 03

Parent Communication Disconnect

Parents had zero visibility when their ward left campus, leading to repeated panic calls, curfew disputes, and accountability friction.

Resolution

Automated instant parent notification triggers via SMS and messaging whenever a gatepass is issued and when the student passes security gates.

Scope Discipline: Features Killed
WHAT WE SAID NO TO
Public Web Portal with Open Registration
Why Rejected

Student residency and movement records are sensitive and strictly confidential. Exposing public registration invites brute-force attacks.

Shipped Instead

Internal university SSO with strictly pre-provisioned institutional credentials (@starex.edu.in).

Native App Store Downloads (iOS App Store / Google Play)
Why Rejected

Native store review delays and fragmented guard devices make urgent campus policy updates difficult to distribute.

Shipped Instead

Installable Progressive Web App (PWA) that updates instantly and runs seamlessly on budget guard phones.

Parallel Physical Paper Logbooks
Why Rejected

Keeping paper backups encourages guards and wardens to fall back on manual habits, leading to inconsistent double-entry.

Shipped Instead

100% digital gate tracking with offline local storage sync and immutable audit trails.

Expensive Proprietary Turnstile Hardware
Why Rejected

Dedicated hardware turnstiles are cost-prohibitive, break down from dust and weather, and require specialized maintenance contracts.

Shipped Instead

Camera-driven QR and facial verification running directly on standard mobile devices and tablets.

Engineering & Architecture Ownership
LEADERSHIP & EXECUTION
End-to-End Product & Engineering: Conceptualized and developed the entire system from scratch for Starex University using Next.js, TypeScript, and Supabase.
Security & Tenant Isolation: Engineered strict PostgreSQL Row Level Security (RLS) policies and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) ensuring students, wardens, and guards only access authorized data.
Guard Perimeter Checkpoint UI: Designed a dead-simple, high-contrast mobile-first scanner interface for security staff to scan QR codes and verify facial identity in outdoor sunlight.
Parent Notification Engine: Implemented automated webhook dispatch delivering instant departure and arrival alerts to parents upon security checkpoint scan.
Offline PWA Architecture: Built service worker caching so security checkpoints continue validating active gatepasses without interruption during intermittent campus Wi-Fi drops.

Architectural Trade-offs

Database-Level RLS over Application Middleware Checks

Why: Guarantees data isolation at the Postgres layer so wardens and guards can never leak cross-hostel records even under API tampering.

Trade-off: Required rigorous SQL policy definitions and claims mapping for multiple user roles.

Offline-First ServiceWorker Caching for Perimeter Gates

Why: Campus boundary gates frequently lose Wi-Fi connectivity; security lines cannot afford to freeze while waiting on server roundtrips.

Trade-off: Demanded careful local indexedDB caching and conflict-free background mutation sync.

Automated Webhook Dispatch for Instant Parent Alerts

Why: Removes manual communication burden from staff by automatically notifying parents the second a student scans out.

Trade-off: Required reliable asynchronous queue retries for SMS provider API delivery.
